Hill's Way: A Treasure Trove of Rules to Live and Design By
Tips on working with clear tents and lighting. What's cool about working with a clear tent is that you can light from the inside and outside. For Judge Mathis' birthday event we were able to utilize leftover gels from the ABDC event a few days before. A good tip is to buy your own rolls of gel (about $100 per roll) rather than having your lighting guys buy it and keep it in their inventory. With multiple colors used on an event you rarely go through all the rolls. We keep a trash can filled with leftover gels. This can save you and your client money in the long run. The same can be said for standard gobo plates. Over the past 20 years at Warner Bros. I have developed quite a collection! Always ask your lighting team at the end of the night for the plates. We keep ours categorized by design in a box in our office. For more photos and information from the Judge Mathis event go to Here Comes the Judge.
Doing an event is very much like making a movie because you’re utilizing theatrical elements to create a sensory experience. You want to evoke a response. In film they do that with lighting, costume, set design, props and more. When we do events professionally, we do the same thing. And even when designing a party at home for family and friends, you’ll find that by taking one element -- a color, theme, or even certain ingredient – you can create a complete and memorable experience.
